The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has urged customers to take full advantage of its ongoing free prepaid meter programme, designed to improve billing transparency and strengthen customer confidence in electricity supply.
The Chief Executive Officer of EKEDC, Mrs Rekhiat Momoh, made the appeal during the company’s Customers’ Consultative Forum held on Thursday at the Apapa Business Unit in Lagos.
The forum attracted customers from several communities within the Apapa district, including Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Amukoko, Badia, Ajegunle, Tolu, Plaza, Wharf Road, Idewu, Odofin, Sari, Boundary and Apapa.
Momoh was represented by Mr Babatunde Lasaki, General Manager, Corporate Communications reiterated the company’s commitment to ensuring that every unmetered customer receives a genuine, certified, and properly installed prepaid meter at no cost.
She explained that the town hall meeting was organised to gather feedback on customers’ challenges and identify ways the DisCo can improve service delivery.
She stressed that the free metering initiative is part of EKEDC’s broader strategy to eliminate estimated billing, improve customer satisfaction, and enhance operational efficiency.
“We are fully committed to ensuring that our customers receive free, certified prepaid meters directly from EKEDC.
“This programme is designed to make billing more transparent, empower customers to monitor their consumption, and strengthen trust between the DisCo and the communities we serve,” she said.
Momoh added that the meters meet all regulatory and technical standards, assuring customers of durability, accuracy, and national compliance.
The EKEDC boss issued a firm warning to customers against patronising unauthorised individuals claiming to sell or fast-track prepaid meters.
“EKEDC does not authorise any third party to charge customers for prepaid meters.
” Anyone demanding money for metering is a fraudster. Customers should not pay for what is completely free,” she cautioned.
She urged customers to report suspicious activities, extortion attempts, or fraudulent claims through EKEDC’s official channels.
She also noted that the company is working with security agencies to curb meter-related fraud.
Momoh encouraged customers to apply for meters through approved EKEDC platforms, including customer service centres, the official website, and designated district offices.
She assured them that metering teams have been deployed across communities and that installation schedules are being strictly followed.
Reaffirming EKEDC’s commitment to improved electricity supply, she highlighted ongoing investments in network expansion, infrastructure upgrades, and operational optimisation.
“Our goal is to ensure fair billing and reliable power supply for every customer.
” The free prepaid meter programme is a major step in that direction, and customer welfare will always remain a top priority,” she noted.
Momoh also assured residents of improved service delivery during the forthcoming Yuletide season, stating that the company is working tirelessly to ensure stable power supply throughout the festivities.
At the forum, Oba Moroof Oyekunle Amodu-Tijani Oluwa (Amore III) of Iwa and Apapa Kingdom commended EKEDC for its service to the community and encouraged residents to take advantage of the free meter programme.
He also called for peaceful conflict resolution mechanisms between EKEDC and customers and urged residents to protect EKEDC’s installations.
“When electricity equipment is vandalised, it affects everyone.
” We must protect EKEDC’s assets and avoid tampering with meters and other infrastructure,” he said.
ACP Onwuamaegbu Onyinye, Area Commander, Area B Command Headquarters, Apapa, commended EKEDC for choosing the forum as a platform for dispute resolution.
She assured the company of police support in safeguarding electricity infrastructure and urged customers to desist from vandalism.
CSP Uche Gabriel, DPO of Ajeromi Police Division, also appealed to residents to secure transformers and electrical installations, noting that vandalism had become frequent in parts of Apapa.
