NGO cautions youths on drug abuse

By Giwa SHILE

Vanguard Against Drug Abuse, a non-governmental organisation has advised youths in the country to desist from drug abuse.

The president of the organisation, Dr Hope Abraham, also said on Thursday in Abuja that the youth ought to be aware of politicians who could use them as thugs during the electioneering.

“Most elections in the country come with one form of security challenges or the other and in most cases, youths are used.

“Those who are used to rig elections in the past or incite violence during elections are youths who at the end turn out to be victims of their acts.

“Therefore, I urged you to resist any attempt by the politicians to use you as instrument of destruction during elections,’’ he said.

He observed that most crimes committed across the country were caused by the youth under the influence of drugs and other substances.

“Most rape cases, kidnapping and armed robbery are all carried out by the people under the influence of drug.

“Even, the activities of the insurgents and most carnage on the nation’s high ways, are caused by people abusing drugs,’’ he said.

Abraham, however, called on Nigerians to join hands with the Federal Government to tackle the menace of drug abuse.

He also advised drug addicts to subject themselves to correctional programmes initiated by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
