Customs seize imported Chinese drinks, others

The Deputy Comptroller General of Customs Strike Force, Kolapo Oladeji, has said the agency seized some Chinese drinks and other items allegedly smuggled into the country through the Abaji-Lokoja highway.

According to Oladeji, the intercepted items were 4,289 cartons of Chinese drinks, 204 gallons of sauce, spaghetti, Semovita, flour, among others.

Oladeji, who made the disclosure in Abuja, said the manner the items were brought into the country violated Nigeria’s  extant laws guiding importation.

He said, “One of the rules of importation into Nigeria is that any item imported must be written in English language, but the goods seized were written in Chinese language. This contravenes import rules in line with Section 146 Paragraph E of SEMA 2004 CAP 45 Law of Nigeria.

“The goods were intercepted along Abaji-Lokoja highway and they include 4,289 cartons of Chinese drinks, 204 gallons of sauce, Spaghetti, Semovita, flour, among others.”

While urging  importers to ensure they follow relevant rules while going about their business, Oladeji said the Customs Strike Force team had advanced its operations, using technology to boost intelligence gathering.
