The Joint Education Stakeholders Action Coalition (JESAC) says it will mobilise its members to support education friendly candidates ahead of the 2019 general elections.
The Chairman of JESAC, Mr Ike Onyechere, , said this on Wednesday in Abuja.
He said JESAC had come up an initiative to ensure that stakeholders in the education sector were sensitised, mobilised and organised to support education friendly candidates.
Onyechere said the initiative was to get the 24 million voting age members of JESAC to bond, speak, work and vote together for only candidates with good programmes for the education sector.
He said the education manifesto of the candidates must comply with JESAC Charter of irreducible minimum commitment for transformation of education.
The JESAC chairman said that insecurity in schools with its tragic results was one of the consequences of neglect of the education sector.
Onyechere alleged that criminal misappropriation of resources meant for education by corrupt and education-unfriendly political leaders was a major setback in the sector.
According to him, teachers in many states are owed many months of arrears of salaries with others lacking minimum protective physical security infrastructure like perimeter fencing and security surveillance.
“Since 2010 general elections, candidates have been presented with opportunity to address JESAC-in-session on their plans for the education sector.
“With 24 million voting age members, we have the population, brainpower and structures to determine outcomes of presidential, gubernatorial and legislative elections in Nigeria,” he said.
