Tinubu suspends EFCC boss, DSS interrogates him

By Chinedu Ogbonna
The Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, was on Wednesday suspended indefinitely by the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over weighty allegations.
A press release signed by Director, Information, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Willie Bassey, on June 14, President Tinubu approved the suspension of Bawa to allow for a proper investigation into his conduct while in office following weighty allegations of abuse of office levelled against him.
“Mr Bawa has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Director, Operations in the Commission, Mohammed Umar, who will oversee the affairs of the Office of the Chairman of the Commission pending the conclusion of the investigation,” the statement noted.
Meanwhile, the Department of State Services (DSS) has subjected the suspended chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa to interrogation over allegations of abuse of office levelled against him.
DSS spokesperson, Dr. Peter Afunanya, who confirmed this on Wednesday night, said Bawa honoured invitation of the DSS immediately after he was suspended from office earlier on Wednesday.
According to him, “Bawa arrived a few hours ago. The invitation relates to some investigative activities concerning him.”
The DSS, however, didn’t state if he had been released on bail or still being held at its facility in Abuja.
President Bola Tinubu had approved the indefinite suspension from office of Mr. Bawa as chairman of EFCC, to allow for proper investigation into his conduct while in office.
He was directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Director of Operations in the anti-graft Commission, who will oversee the affairs of the Office of the Chairman of the Commission pending the conclusion of the investigation.
