New road markings: Commercial drivers applaud FCTA

By Giwa SHILE

A Commercial drivers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Monday applauded the FCT administration for the new road markings across the city centre.

Some of them who spoke  in an interview in Abuja, said with the new development, traffic would be properly managed.

Mr Ahmed Abubakar, a driver at Wuse market said that the road markings were very important in directing the drivers, stating that it showed different signs that motorists should observe while driving.

He, however, said that not all commercial drivers knew the meaning of the road markings, adding that drivers should be educated on the various signs to make the new development effective.

Also, Gabriel Alabi, a driver, said that learning the various road markings and signs would help drivers stay alive because the rate of accident would reduce.

According to him, with the new road markings, it will help drivers avoid penalties associated with road offences.

He said that if all the states in the country can have the road markings within the city and on the highways, it would beautify the roads and help new drivers know the various directions.

Reacting to the road markings, Mr Yusuf Adeniyi, the General Secretary of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), said that the new road markings in the FCT were long overdue.

He said that it was a welcome development which would reduce the accident rate and help drivers know where to park within the city.

Adeniyi, however, commended the FCT administration for taking up that initiative which would help the commercial drivers a lot.

Lines and symbols constructed include Zebra lines, yellow box, paved areas and the stop signs before the traffic lights in Wusa 11, Maitama and Central areas of Abuja.
