A former chief of army staff, General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma (rtd), has met with the League of Northern Democrats and decried the issue of bad governance in the country.

The former minister of defence expressed worry at the country’s falling standards and poor quality of political leadership.

He told those in authority to take immediate steps to stem the tide, which he described as alarming.

Danjuma made these comments when he received the delegation of the League of Northern Democrats who called on him in his Ikoyi Residence in Lagos.

The LND spokesperson, Dr Ladan Salihu, revealed this in a statement.

According to the statement, the elder statesman said, “Leadership quality in Nigeria is going down and down and down.”

He further said the situation is worse in the North and urged the region’s leaders to sit up and stem the worrisome tide.

Danjuma, who was also a former defence minister, further advised the League of Northern Democrats to pursue their vision with measured doggedness because they are up against a corrupt political class with plenty of power and money that will be ready to fight back to continue being in control.

Leader of the delegation and former Kano State Governor Sen Ibrahim Shekarau had earlier said that their visit was to brief Danjuma about the vision and mission of the League, which were principally to influence the emergence of credible political leaders across the country, especially in the North, by forging unity among the various ethnic groups in the North, facilitating a credible leadership recruitment process across all public offices and making the North a bloc of first influence in Nigeria.

In his response, General Danjuma said that while age is not on his side, he commended the League for this initiative and its commitment and promised to support the group in whatever way possible.

The general became emotional when Muktari, the son of the late Prime Minister Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, recounted the events of January 1966. He said the late Sir Abubakar was truly a great man.

The LND was convened in July and was endorsed by former Vice President Namadi Sambo, General Martin Luther Agwai, General AbdulRahman Dambazau, General Alwali Kazir, and a host of other northern leaders.
