Food vendors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have expressed frustration over poor patronage due to low turnout of voters in Saturday’s Area Council’s poll.
TBI Africa said that across section of vendors who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Karu Area Council expressed sadness over the development.
Mrs Maureen Joseph, who sells snacks and bottle drinks said she was unhappy with the development.
She said she was motivated by the large turnout during the Presidential and National Assembly election on Feb. 23.
“I am not happy that I have not been able to record many sales, unlike in the last election.
“As at this time on Feb. 23, I have ordered for more drinks but as I speak to you I have not sold up to half of what I sold in the last election,’’ she said.
Joseph said the low turnout could be attributed to voter apathy.
Mrs Rebecca Eze, who sells packaged food, corroborated the claim, saying she has incurred lost due to her inability to record much sales.
“I went out of my way to get some items on credit so I can be able to meet up with the expected high demand during the election.
“But it is sad that many people failed to come out.
“I might end up dishing out the food to beggars at the end of the day,” Eze said.
Mr Sule Abba, a sachet water seller said he was able to sell only two bags as against the last elections day when he sold close to seven bags.
NAN reports that the vendors were practically begging voters, election officers, observers and party agents to patronise them.
Meanwhile, some motorcycle riders in the area were seen making brisk business as the ban on movement seemed not fully enforced.
Also motorists, besides those on essential duties, were plying the roads freely while shops and markets were closed to business.
