Fire report: FCT Fire Service apologises to NAN, Amigo Supermarket over misinformation

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Fire Service on Friday apologised to Amigo supermarket, Wuse 2, Abuja for misinforming the public over the outfit that was affected by the July 9 fire incident.

The Fire Service had, through its Public Relations Officer, Mr Timveh Jeremiah, claimed that the fire that hit Wuse 2, on the said date, gutted Amigo Supermarket, a popular supermarket in the federal capital.

Jeremiah had told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), that the fire touched some areas of the outfit before it was put off by personnel of the fire service.

But the spokesman, in a statement on Friday in Abuja, said that the incident happened at the premises of H-MEDIX store, “and not the Amigo Supermarket”.

“The information given to the public indicated that Amigo supermarket was the outfit hit by the fire. That was indeed what we told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), and other media houses,” he said.

He blamed the goof on the wrong address the fire service got from its fireman, who led the crew out to the scene of the incident.

“To set the records straight, we wish to stress that the unfortunate fire outbreak occurred at H-MEDIX, and not Amigo supermarket, as reported.

“We wish to tender our apology to Amigo supermarket and NAN, whose credibility might have been affected by the publication, and the public, for the misinformation,’’ Jeremiah said.
