3 Kenyan policemen charged with murder of British aristocrat’s son

 By Aliyu DANLADI

Three Kenyan police officers were on Thursday charged in the port city of Mombasa with the 2012 murder of the son of a British aristocrat.

Naftali Chege, Charles Munyiri and Baraka Bulima denied the murder charges and were detained till July 19, pending a ruling on their application for bail.

Alexander Monson was 28 years old when he was found dead in his jail cell after being detained during a night out in Diani, near Mombasa on Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast.

An outcry from his family and local Rights groups led to an inquest into his death, which found there had been attempts to cover up what happened and threat against witnesses.

Recently, prosecutors ordered the arrest of four policemen after the Mombasa court that ordered the inquest determined that Monson had died in police custody after being arrested.

The fourth suspect, John Pamba, failed to appear in court and the court issued a warrant for his arrest.
