The North South Power Company Limited (NSP) had constructed a four block of classrooms for its host communities in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger as part of it Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
Mr Ugochukwu Chioke, NSP Chief Operating Officer, said during the commissioning of the project at Day Secondary School Zumba, on Monday that the project was to improve quality of education in the community.
“NSP is interested in the welfare of host communities in terms of the community education, this is one aspect of project the community needed.
“The project is a standard one and fully equipped to serve the people especially for children in the community to have easy access to quality education,” he said.
Chioke said that the project would also empower the community economically due to its importance to the well being of the residents.
In his remarks, Alhaji Hassan Abdullahi, Consultant to NSP on CSR, disclosed that the company had executed other projects such as drilling of motorised boreholes in some host communities.
He disclosed that plans were underway to establish six cottage industries in host communities and commended the communities for ensuring peaceful coexistence.
Meanwhile, Prof. Danladi Hakimi, Chairman, Dam Host Stakeholders Committee, described the project as laudable, adding that basic education was key to the development of any community.
He urged the company to work towards providing portable water and electrification for host communities in need of such services.
In his address, Mr Jafaru Wambai, Principal of the School, said that the school was established in 2013, but commenced academic session in 2014 under a tree with just one pupil.
He noted that the school which started with just primary session, has grown to junior and senior secondary classes.
Wambai disclosed that the distance of Shiroro Secondary School from Zumba community informed the establishment of the school for easy access by residents.
NSP also donated 2,000 notebooks to the school and other instructional materials.
