20 severely injured as fire razes block of flats in Lagos

The Director General Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, has said that 20 people were injured in a fire incident that razed a block of flats at No 44, Adebayo Str. off Ile-Ile, Ketu Alapere in Lagos.

Oke-Osanyintolu made the disclosure in Lagos on Thursday.

“When we get to the scene, a block of flats consisting of six units was gutted by fire at No 44, Adebayo Str. off Ile-Ile, Ketu Alapere, behind Polaris Bank in Lagos.

“After the rescue, we discovered five casualties while four of them were treated on the scene and another 15 victims who were severely burnt have been taken to hospital for further treatment.

” The cause of the fire is unknown as there is power outage, but there is speculation at the scene that the fire is as a result of gas cylinder explosion.

“Two units  of the apartment were affected while the prompt response of the fire service prevented it from further spreading,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.

He said that although the fire had been controlled, the agency had to request for police back up due to miscreants hampering their rescue efforts.
