COVID-19: Association tasks agencies on collaborative efforts to prevent infected passengers

The Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) has urged aviation agencies to collaborate efforts in preventing the influx of infected passengers with Coronavirus into the country.

The President of ATSSSAN, Mr Illitrus Ahmadu, made the plea ) in Lagos on Friday.

Lagos State had on Friday confirmed the first case of Coronavirus, code-named COVID-19.

Ahmadu said that the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Ministry of Health should have effective collaborations on how to contain the spread of the virus.

“There should be a collaborative efforts, because this is a national issue and it is not about one agency.

“We have a facilitation committee at the airport to activate the safety and preventive mechanism that are put in place.

“We have already recorded the diseases in the country from an Italian, and I understand that he has already been quarantined.

“Therefore, such collaboration should be enhanced so that any identified persons that might have contacted the Italian should be quarantined and appropriate treatment given to them.

Ahmadu said with regards to workers that were working at the airport, there was need for the health authorities to provide necessary preventive measures for them.

He said the airport authorities should provide adequate equipment such as hand gloves, masks, because they were the first point of contact to international passengers.

According to him, this preventive measure is necessary, because workers screened the passengers in and out of the country at their respective duty posts.

“We are equally worried about our workers that are working at the airport, because their safety also matters to the union.

“The authorities should provide an enabling protective gears being interacting with passengers coming in and out of the country,” he said.
