The Lagos State Government has said it is dredging 235 channels to curb flooding in the state.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tunji Bello, during an inspection of the canals, explained that the government was working on 193 secondary and 42 primary channels in the state.
He said, “The state government is working on all channels to curb the effect of flood in the state. The Emergency Flood Abatement Gang is in all the 37 Local Government Areas and 20 Local Government Development Areas, cleaning and clearing canals, drainage, as well as opening manholes.
“I want to appeal to residents to desist from the arbitrary dumping of solid wastes into drainage and canals, and also desist from erecting buildings on drainage alignments to continuously sustain a flood-free Lagos as most flood challenges are man-made.
“I urge all residents who still patronise cart pushers to refrain from the illegal act but ensure they dispose of their wastes through approved PSP operators.”
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Drainage and Water Resources, Joe Igbokwe, noted that those who encroached on the canals right of way had always constituted a major challenge in the state drainage maintenance.
He urged residents to ensure that their environment was clean and free from stagnant water at all times.
