Iran unveils new short-range missile

By Aliyu DANLADI

Iran has unveiled the latest generation of its short-range Fateh ballistic missile.

The new missile, dubbed Fateh Mobin, will be produced in Iran, Defence Minister Amir Hatami said on Monday.

The minister said the new generation was more accurate than the previous ones, but did not give further technical details.

“Iran will continue to improve its missile system day by day no matter what criticism is leveled from abroad,” Hatami was quoted by the state-run IRNA news agency as saying.

He stressed that the missiles would only be used for self-defence.

Iran has faced harsh criticism on its missile programme, especially of the medium-range ones, which, with their 2,000-kilometre range, could be used to strike any part of her arch-rival, Israel.

Iran rejects the criticism of its missile programme, saying it is purely for self-defence, given the threats it faces from the United States and regional rivals, Israel and Saudi Arabia.
