Lagos NUJ election: Council elders sue for peaceful campaign

The Election Committee and Council of Elders of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Chapter, on Tuesday sued for peaceful campaign among candidates ahead of its forthcoming election.

Mr Debo Adeniji, Chairman, Lagos, NUJ Credentials Committee, said at a Peace Pact Forum that forum was to ensure that there was unison among the candidates.

The credentials committee had organised a peace pact forum for the candidates in the September 29 election with the council elders in attendance for advice.

He said it was also to curb unethical and unprofessional electioneering going on among the candidates.

He said that 11 candidates were expected at the forum but seven were present with the incumbent chairman, Dr Qasim Akinreti taking an apology for his absence at the forum.

‘’We got a kind of apology from Akinreti saying that he had other engagements and today’s forum was not part of his itineary.

‘’Others did not send any apology whatsoever,’’ he said.

He, however, encouraged peaceful electioneering among the candidates, pointing out that there is life after the election.

Mrs Funke Fadugba, a former Lagos State NUJ chairman, said the incumbent and aspiring candidates should maintain peace in their electioneering.

According to Fadugba, it is only when there is peace that there will be development.

She said that there were issues affecting journalists which should be the focus of the campaign.

Those present at the Peace Pact Forum were Mr Leye Ajayi, Lagos NUJ Chairmanship aspirant, Mr Alfred Odifa, Secretary, Mr Raymond Tedunjaye.

Others were Mr Philip Nwosu, Assistant General Secretary, Mrs Iyabo Ogunjuyigbe, Treasurer and Mr Innocent Anaba, ex officio and Mr Isaac Ayodele, auditor
