A former President, Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), Dr Samuel Nzekwe, has called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts at providing critical infrastructure to drive the economy in 2021.
Nzekwe made the call on Friday in Ota, Ogun.
He stressed the need for government to provide critical infrastructure that would aid the development of the real sector and boost the country’s economy.
The former ANAN boss listed the critical infrastructure to include: stable power supply, good road network and adequate security, among others.
“The availability of stable electricity supply will help both small and medium businesses to thrive, as their impacts will positively contribute to the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP).
“The recovery of Nigeria’s economy from the current recession in 2021 depends largely on efforts by the government at providing sufficient critical infrastructure that will spur the nation out of recession.
“The government needs to proactively address the challenges that are not making the real sector to produce enough goods and services for the country,” he said.
Nzekwe noted that Nigeria had been adversely affected due to the COVID-19 pandemic that effected UK, USA and other countries, where goods were being imported.
He urged government to also make COVID-19 vaccines available, as the scourge had affected every sector of economy.
The former ANAN president further said that recovery of the nation’s economy should not be based on increasing prices of petroleum products in the international market, as the country did not have full control of petroleum prices.
He said that the security challenge should also be seen as a threat to economic recovery, as farmers could no longer go to the farm to produce.
