Blackout: Electricity firm reacts as residents of Maiduguri protest electricity bill

The Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC), supplying power to Borno, Adamawa, Taraba and Yobe states, has reacted to protests by residents of Maiduguri over its latest bill distributed to customers on estimated billing despite three weeks of blackout.

The residents of Maiduguri have been experiencing blackout since January 26 when insurgents destroyed one of the electricity tower supplying power to Maiduguri and its environs.

Many of the residents who vowed not to settle the bill asked why should they pay for something they did not consume since there was no power for almost a month.

Reacting to the development, the Senior Manager, Corporate Communication of YEDC, Mr Kingsley Nkemneme, said that the bill given to the consumers in Maiduguri was for electricity consumed before the blackout.

“The electricity bills being distributed have been computed with the energy consumed by customers in the affected areas from 1st to 25th January only, as the power disruption occurred on 26th January 2021 as a result of a faulty 330 KV transmission line..

“We regret all inconveniences caused to our dear valued customers during this time.

“Be rest assured that work is ongoing to restore power supply to our network for onward distribution to end users.

“YEDC assures you of its commitment to distribute electricity in a safe, reliable and environmentally responsible manner for a brighter future,” Nkemneme said.
