Professionals must play active roles in politics — Mamora

By Aliyu DANLADI

A former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Olorunnimbe Mamora, has tasked professionals in the country to play active roles in politics toward enhancing good governance and socio-economic development.

Mamora said this during the 34th Annual General Assembly of the Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria (APBN) in Lagos.

He said that the role of professionals in politics could not be overemphasised, maintaining that it was the only way to eliminate mediocre and quacks in the nation’s politics.

“Professionals must get involved in our political space to address the sorry state of the nation’s politics.

“Our political system will remain so, if professionals continue to take the back seats,” he said.

Mamora urged professionals to also support their colleagues who are already in politics by leveraging on their prestige, goodwill and expertise, to transform the society and drive inclusive growth.

The President of APBN, Dr Omede Idris, said at the event that over the past two years, the association had advised and proffered solutions to many national issues cutting across all sectors of the economy.

He said that the past two years were not devoid of operational challenges, which include non-formation of more state chapters, non-admission of additional professional member bodies, lack of functional vehicles and non acquisition of land in Abuja.

Idris expressed optimism that the incoming Council and Board members would address some of the challenges faced by the association and also evolve strategies that would drive sustainable socio-economic growth.
