Greek coastguard intercepts boat with 56 migrants on board

By Giwa SHILE

A boat was discovered in the Ionian Sea with 56 migrants on board, the Greek coastguard said on Monday.

“The boat was intercepted a few kilometres off the island of Lefkada on Sunday after one of the migrants was able to send out an emergency signal,’’ the coastguard said.

A patrol boat was able to bring the migrants to safety and the authorities arrested two suspected smugglers.

There were eight children on board.

The Mediterranean is the world’s most dangerous sea migration route.

Recently, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said 1,422 people had died in the Mediterranean since the start of 2018, mostly on other routes further west.
