Nearly half of American voters fear Trump tariffs will hurt U.S. – poll

By Kunle SHONUGA

Large numbers of Americans fear that President Donald Trump’s import tariffs policy will result in negative consequences for the United States, a new PEW Research Center poll showed on Thursday.

“Overall, nearly half (49%) of U.S. adults say increased tariffs between the U.S. and its trading partners will be bad for the country.

“A smaller share (40%) said the tariffs will be good for the US, while 11 percent say they don’t know how the tariffs will affect the country.

“In addition, talk of tariffs and trade wars has registered widely with the public, with 82 per cent reporting they are paying attention to debate over trade,’’ the release said.

According to the release, as with most issues in contemporary U.S. politics, opinions break along party lines, with 73 per cent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents approving of Trump’s approach to trade.

This was compared with 77 per cent of Democrats and Democratic leaners who are opposed.
