As Muslims celebrate Eid-el-Kabir, the management of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has urged its customers to avoid illegal connections during the festive season and be safety conscious.
Mrs Angel Olarenwaju, Head, Brands and Communications Strategy, said Muslims faithful and the public should put the necessary safety tips into practice during and after the Sallah.
She expressed the felicitations of IBEDC as a responsible corporate citizen to Muslims and promised better service to its customers.
“The habit of tapping power directly from Low Tension (LT) lines to power light bulbs during parties or community carnivals should stop.
“Assuming all overhead wires are energized at lethal voltages, no one should assume that a wire is safe to touch even if it is down or appears to be insulated. Our customers are advised not to touch any fallen overhead power lines,” Olarenwaju said.
She advised the public to visit the nearest IBEDC office or call to report fallen electrical lines.
She also wants customers to switch off all electrical appliances and unplug all connections from the mains when not in use and when leaving the house.
Cautioning against open air cooking during the season, she said it should not be done close to or under any power (low and high tension) line.
“They should always ensure that the fire is completely put out after cooking. Water is a conductor of electricity; do not handle powered electrical appliances, switches, sockets and electrical connections with wet hands.
“Always ensure your hands and other parts of your body are dry before handling electricity to avoid shocks.
“Our offices are also opened throughout our franchise for customers to report faults, make enquires, pay bills and others.
“We, as a responsible corporate citizen, believe in the sanctity of lives and the value of properties necessary for societal growth and development.
“We strongly appeal to all and sundry to adhere to this call for safety while we celebrate,” she said in a statement.
