Edo records over 200 fire outbreaks in 9 months – Commissioner

By Giwa SHILE

The Edo State Commissioner for Youths and Special Duties, Mr Mika Amanokha on Monday said over 200 fire outbreaks were recorded in the state between January and September.

Amanokha, made this known while presenting the 2018 budget performance and achievements of the ministry on the floor of the State House of Assembly in Benin.

He said however that no life was lost in the incidents while a lot of property was saved during the period under review.

The commissioner disclosed that a total of N15. 2 million was generated internally by the ministry against the targeted revenue of N24 million.

”The revenue was generated from renewal fees by social clubs, voluntary organisations and, churches, among others,” he said.

Amanokha attributed the low revenue generation to the ongoing renovation of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

He however expressed optimism that the target would be met within the remaining months of the year, saying that more social activities would take place during the Yuletide.

The Speaker, Kabiru Adjoto, urged the ministry to improve on its revenue generation by exploring all other avenues within its jurisdiction.

Adjoto, however, raised alarm on the influx of commercial sex workers to the legislative quarters and its environs, and urged the ministry to take urgent steps to curtail the ugly trend.
