A legal practitioner in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) , mr Anthony Agbonlahor, has decried poor condition of courts in satellite towns of the territory.
Agbonlahor, a member of Prosecution Team 17 of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), said this in Abuja on Saturday.
He said poor conditions of courts had hampered performance of judges in recent times.
“You cannot expect the best from a judge when there is no light and he’s operating under a difficult condition,’’ he said.
The lawyer urged the Federal government to increase funding to the judiciary for optimal result.
“This will facilitate the establishment of more courts. In fact, some of the courts do not have recording machines and the ones available in most courts are not maintained.
“The equipment need to be replaced in order for work to be enhanced and made easy for judges,’’ Agbonlahor said.
He also noted that the welfare of judges is a very important issue to be taken seriously.
“If a senator working for the same government can take home about N13.8 million every month, and a Federal High Court judge takes home N500, 000, the disparity is much.
“Performance will be enhanced if assuming, the minimum salary of a judge is N3 million or N4 million a month,’’ Agbonlahor said.
