Power Africa inaugurates transmission roadmap

By Giwa SHILE

The U.S. Department of State has announced the inauguration of a transmission roadmap that would extend to 2030 under the U.S. Power Africa Project.

According to the Department, the transmission roadmap would be a practical approach to unlocking electricity trade.

“The Transmission Roadmap to 2030 is a critical piece to Power
Africa’s 2.0 strategy.

“It recognises that the power generation projects Power Africa is
supporting must have adequate transmission and distribution
infrastructure to actually bring electricity to millions of people.

“This Roadmap will guide leaders in identifying and focusing on
specific projects that will connect countries and bring down the cost of power, which will drive economic growth,’’ it said.

The Department said that the Power Africa, a U.S. government-led initiative, being coordinated by the United States Agency for
International Development (USAID), was to double electricity access in sub-Saharan Africa.

It said that the roadmap had prioritised 18 projects that could unlock ten regional opportunities and meet the energy needs of the regional power pools.
