The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has warned operators of illegal gas centres in Cross River to stop their operations or ready to face sanctions, the TBI Africa reports
Operations Controller of DPR, Mr Bassey Nkanga, in the state gave the warning on Wednesday in Calabar during the fourth quarter meeting with Liquefied Petroleum Gas Plant Operators/Retailers in the state.
Nkanga said that DPR would clampdown on any gas operator or retailer operating without a valid licence issued by the DPR.
According to him, several cases of gas explosion has been recorded in the state, adding that the DPR is intensifying surveillance activities with a view to curbing further explosions.
He said that government had intensified efforts in making sure that gas was extended and sold to residents in the rural areas due to its affordability.
The Operations Controller charged the retailers to report anyone operating a gas centre without approval of the DPR for proper investigations and sanction, if necessary.
“Gas business is a very serious one. We will not tolerate anyone who is not willing to operate under the stipulated guidelines.
“In as much as government encourages the sale of gas to be extended to rural areas, every operator must be licenced.
“We must access the location, facilities and the standard of equipment you need to operate with.
“Anyone without a license will not be allowed to operate. We are willing to regularise any operator who meet the requirements.
“Some of these gas facilities are located in an unsafe environment. Gas operation must meet our health and safety requirements,” he said.
He warned the operators to desist from selling gas in motor parks, mechanic workshops and other areas prone to fire out breaks.
He charged them on the operational efficiency of their facilities and the consistent training of their sales representative to ensure safety at all times.
Mr Zak Agba, from Marian Material Gas Plant, said he was operating in Ikom and Ogoja Local Government Areas with certified licenses.
He said that his gas centres were fully equipped with safety requirements, adding that his sales representatives were properly trained for the job.
