Senate c’ttee seeks speedy completion of road projects in Osun

By Giwa SHILE

Members of the Senate Committee on Works on Wednesday inspected some ongoing federal road projects in Osun and called for their speedy completion.

The three-member committee was led by its Chairman, Sen. Kabiru Gaya.

He was accompanied by  Sen. Abiodun Olujimi and Sen. Clifford Ordia.

Speaking with newsmen at the site of the Ojikutu bridge in Ilobu area of the state, Gaya expressed displeasure over the level of work done.

He said that the duration for the completion of the project had elapsed, adding that the new date of March 2019 promised by the contractor to finish the project must be complied with.

” The body of the Ojikutu bridge is visually good but the contractor needs to be encouraged to finish the bridge within the stipulated time.

“Although we are not satisfied with the slow pace of the project, we hope that the project will be completed by March 2019 as promised by the contractor,’’ he said.

Gaya said the essence of the oversight visit was to check the activities of contractors handling Federal Government projects across the country and to ensure speedy completion.

Speaking on the Oyo-Iwo road project, Gaya said that the road which is 30.2km was about 70 per cent completed, adding that N3 billion had been paid to the contractor.

He added that the Osogbo-Ilesa road project was about 78 per cent completed.

Gaya, however, decried the deplorable condition of Osogbo-Ogbomosho road, saying passengers now have to spend two hours to get to Ogbomoso from Osogbo instead of 45 minutes.

He promised to discuss the deplorable nature of the road at the Senate.

Members of the committee,  who later paid a courtesy call on Gov. Rauf Aregbesola, commended him for the infrastructural development in the state.

In his remarks, Aregbesola commended the lawmakers for visiting the state to assess the level of work done on federal roads.

Aregbesola said that more than N 10 billion certified by the Federal Ministry of Works and approved had been spent on federal roads in the state.

He, however, said that the Federal Government was still owing the state more than N24 billion.
