Lawyers advocate law reform to accommodate ICT for speedy delivery of justice

By Meletus EZE

Some lawyers have called for reform of laws in the justice system to accommodate
Information Communication Technology (ICT) tools for speedy dispensation of justice in the country.

The lawyers made the call at the Call to Bar ceremony for successful candidates at the August 2018 Bar Final
Examination in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to the new wigs, most trending things globally are ICT-based and Nigeria cannot be left behind in
the internet world.

One of the new wigs, Miss Oluwattosin Busari, said that the trend in ICT today had made things easy in many
areas of human endeavour and this could also be adopted in the dispensation of justice.

She said “lawyers should be able to send their applications to courts electronically instead of the former
way of filing and refilling of applications.

“So, I think that via ICT, we can easily get computer generated evidences to aid cases in courts. Government
needs to urgently reform our laws to be able to accommodate ICT.

“Some of our laws are not actually reformed enough to get ICT to be used in courts so I think our government
should work toward reforming our laws so that ICT can be very useful in the justice system.”

Another new wig, Mr Onigwe Mattew, said that with electronic recording, lawyers would be better equipped
because there were many cases being attended to in courts simultaneously.

He said that “with manual recording, efficiency has not been enhanced but with the adoption of
technological gadgets, lawyers will be in better position to deliver good judgment and judicial services to the country.

“Government should make adequate budgetary provision for ICT gadgets that are required to ensure
quick dispensation of justice in our courts.

“Lawyers are reformers and they stand a better chance to reforming the society economically and legally, and
to that effect, if our courts are equipped with up-to-date gadgets, citizens will be more assured of equity and
fairness at all times.”
