The Jigawa Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it has arrested 593 suspects and recovered 565.87 kilogrammes of narcotics in 2018.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Ikechukwu Emmanuel, made the disclosure in a statement in Dutse on Tuesday.

He said that the suspects arrested comprised 589 males and four females.

Emmanuel explained that the illicit drugs included 165.79kgs of cannabis stavia and 300.08kgs of psychotropic substances.

The spokesman added that the command had successfully secured 102 judgements out of the several cases it filed in court.

“In our sustained effort to make Jigawa state drug-free, the command recorded tangible achievements in 2018.

“With great determination, the command worked hard to limit the supply and abuse of hard drugs and psychoactive substances.

“As a result of this effort, the command, during the year under review, was able to arrest 593 suspects, including four females, and seized 465.79kgs of assorted illicit drugs,” he said.

“It is worthy of note that drug exhibits weighting 6.21tonnes were publicly destroyed in September 2018 at a location in Dutse.

“The drugs, which were destroyed by burning, included cannabis stavia, cocaine and other psychiatric substances.

“The command recorded modest achievements in the year under review as a result of hardwork, as well as the support from the command’s national headquarters and Jigawa State Government,” he added.

Emmanuel, nonetheless, sought the support of well-meaning philanthropists in the command’s fight against drug abuse.
