Tobacco in bin triggered fire that killed 5 in Germany

By Giwa SHILE

A fire that killed five people in Germany was triggered by tobacco that had not been completely extinguished being thrown in the bin.

The findings are the first assessment of a fire expert regarding the fire in the village of Lambrecht in the Palatinate region.

The fire in the attic flat spread from the household refuse, the prosecutor in nearby Frankenthal and the Police in Ludwigshafen said on Wednesday.

The tobacco had been disposed of improperly and there were no indications of a technical defect, the chief prosecutor, Hubert Stroeber, said.

The detailed opinion of the expert is not yet available.

The earlier night-time fire had killed three men between the ages of 43 and 54 and two 54-year-old women.

They were all found dead in the attic flat.

The investigators assumed that all the dead are Polish citizens.——-DPA
