Auditor-General decries poor implementation of audit recommendation

The Auditor-General of the Federation (AuGF), Mr Anthony Ayine, says poor implementation of audit recommendations in inspection and annual audit report impedes efforts to rid the public sector of corruption.

Ayine said this in a statement signed by the Acting Head of Media of the Office, Miss Oghenekevwe Ebireri, on Thursday in Abuja.

The auditor general made the disclosure when a high-level delegation from the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) led by its Executive Secretary, Sharon Ikeazor, visited him in Abuja.

He said the implementation of audit recommendations in Ministries Departments and Agencies (MDAs) would serve as deterrent and promote a more transparent and accountable system.

He however, said that audit findings were largely not acted upon to enable it add the required value which it potentially could to the public service.

“The impact of audit work is in the value it adds by creating improvement in the system, and to re-echo President Muhammadu Buhari’s words, if we do not kill corruption, corruption will kill us.

“The fight against corruption cannot be won by any single individual or organisation, we must collaborate,” he said.

The Auditor-General stressed the need for strong internal controls in the public service which he said was the responsibility of the management of MDAs and urged them to live up to this task.

He commended the Executive Secretary of PTAD for her efforts in repositioning the office.

He said there had been remarkable achievements recorded since Ikeazor took over the reins of power and assured her that the OAuGF would continue to provide relevant support to her work.

Earlier, Ikeazor informed the Auditor-General that PTAD had acted on the recommendations of the OAuGF’s annual report.

She said a personnel audit carried out in 2015 saw to the disengagement of four directors who had been irregularly employed when they were above the age of 50 years.

Ikeazor sought the advice of the Auditor-General in implementing recovery of monies paid to the four dismissed directors during the time of their engagement and to return same to treasury.

The executive secretary also requested that more auditors be deployed to PTAD to support the ongoing Parastatal Pensioner Verification.

She said the federal auditors previously sent to them were very useful, helping to save the government billions of naira that could have been fraudulently diverted.
