Surety turns accused for alleged failure to produce brother

For allegedly failing to produce his brother for whom he stood as  surety, a 38-year-old security guard, Godspower Amadi,  was on Thursday brought before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The defendant, who resides at Ajah, Lagos, is facing a count charge of attempt to pervert justice.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Oriabure, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on March 29, at 4.00p.m. at Ilasan Police Station, Lagos.

He said that the defendant stood as surety for  Genesis Amadi  facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and assault occasioning harm.

Oriabure said that Godspower promised to produce Genesis  anytime he would be needed by the police but failed to do so on three occasions.

“The accused has to show cause why the N100,000 bail bond he entered into as a surety should not be forfeited to the Lagos State Government,” he said.

The alleged offence contravened Sections 97 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

TBI Africa said the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 97 provides for seven years’ imprisonment for attempt to pervert justice.

Godspower, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate Mrs Oluwatoyin Ojuromi, granted him bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She said that one of the sureties must be his blood relation and both sureties should show evidence of two years’ tax payment to Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned until April 25 for mention.
