(dpa/TBI Africa.com) UN peacekeepers in Lebanon on Thursday said it discovered a third tunnel crossing into Lebanon-Israel, months after Tel Aviv said it had found six tunnels along a border line between them.
The UN peacekeeping mission, known as UNIFIL, monitors the situation at the border between Israel and Lebanon.
UNIFIL said it has independently confirmed the existence of five of the six tunnels reported by Israeli Defence Forces tunnels close to the Blue Line in Northern Israel.
“”Of these, three tunnels have been found to be crossing the Blue Line,’’ the UNIFIL said in a statement.
The three tunnels violated a UN Security Council resolution that ended a 2006 war between Lebanon and Israel, according to UNIFIL.
UNIFIL said it had informed Lebanese authorities about the violation and had ““requested urgent follow-up.’’
In December, Israel began a military operation with the stated aim of exposing and neutralising the tunnels allegedly dug by Lebanon’s Iran-allied Hezbollah movement.
In January, Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah acknowledged the existence of the tunnels, saying some of them had preceded its group’s 2006 war against Israel.
