Some electricity consumers in Awka, the Anambra capital, have commended the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), for improved supply.
TBI Afican.com said the customers who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday said they were surprised that they now enjoyed power for up to six hours of the day.
NAN reports that households and businesses in the town hitherto relied on generators for power as they hardly got any supply in about three days, while some areas had been in total blackout.
Mr Effraim Onah said there had been improvement in the past one week because he could now preserve perishable items in his refrigerator.
“I don’t know what has happened, may be they have been punishing us in the past.
“We now enjoy better supply in my area that I can now store food items in my fridge, I just hope they can sustain it,’’ he said.
Also speaking, a customer who identified himself as Mr Anthony said it could be because of the ongoing upgrade of installations being carried out in Awka by the EEDC.
Tony said EEDC must have woken up to their responsibility because of the increased awareness and plans by the civil society to stage a protest.
Another customer who pleaded anonymity said there was no supply to the Amenyi area of the metropolis because of a power surge.
The customer said EEDC should supply power so that the bills they are made to pay could be justified.
Reacting, Mr Emeka Ezeh, Head, Communications Department of EEDC said the improvement was as a result of successful installation of the 15MVA Substation in Agu-Awka.
Ezeh said the activation of the substation which took place before Easter has restored supply to customers who are fed from the substation.
He said that such customers were those attached to the Nnamdi Azikiwe 11KV and the Industrial Area’s 11KV feeders.
According to the image maker, the successful installation at the upgraded substation would bring to an end, the issue of load-shedding to customers in the area.
Ezeh also said the 7.5MVA substation at the Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) premises was at the completion stage
“The newly-upgraded 15MVA power transformer at Agu-Awka Injection substation has been successfully installed.
“Supply has equally been restored to our customers feeding from our Unizik 11KV and Industrial Area 11KV feeders. This has resulted to an end to load-shedding,” he said.
`The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the EEDC had embarked on two projects, including upgrade of Agu-Awka substation from 7.5 MVA to 15MVA and the building of a new 7.5 MVA at the ABS premises both in Awka.
The developments have tremendously improved power supply to the Awka metropolis.
