The Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) has dissociated itself from calls on the Federal Government to dissolve the Hydrocarbon Pollution and Remediation Project (HYPREP) and its governing body.
The Acting Publicity Secretary of MOSOP, Mr Sunny Zorvah, made the movement’s position known on Thursday in Port harcourt.
He said the call was ill- conceived, unpatriotic, selfish, retrogressive and inciting and should be discountenanced by relevant authorities and the Ogoni people.
“We believe that what needs to be done at this critical time in the Ogoni Clean Up implementation will be the government’s commitment to security in Ogoniland.
“The Federal Government should strive toward building the confidence of the communities by ensuring that the project coordinating officers and contractors are on site.
“Yes, HYPREP is working and this can be verified in some communities where work has commenced,” Zorvah said in a statement.
He advised the people of the area to support every noble move by the Federal Government to restore normalcy to Ogoniland and environment.
“It is imperative to encourage the clean-up process and its activities by cooperating with HYPREP in its efforts directed at a successful exercise, considering the continuous impact and damage on our people and communities.
“MOSOP feels the pains and understands the plight of the Ogoni people and others, who have suffered forms of injustice and will never compromise, play to the gallery or sabotage any process and genuine actions aimed at addressing the people’s plight.
“The call for dissolution of the HYPREP council is not necessary as it is capable of inciting the uninformed public,” he said.
He also cautioned against inadequate and substandard job delivery and urged HYPREP to engage only competent contractors in the project.
“MOSOP will not tolerate and will never support sub-standard or recklessness in the implementation of the Ogoni clean-up project.
“The leaders and stakeholders in Ogoni should not allow this opportunity of having our battered environment cleaned to be halted or sabotaged,” he added. ==NAN
