Sultan Foundation inaugurates food distribution to orphans, IDPs in Sokoto

The Sultan Foundation for Peace and Development on Sunday inaugurated a special food distribution programme for orphans and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP’s) in Sokoto State.

The Coordinator, Alhaji Muhammadu Mera, who is also the Emir of Argungu, said while inaugurating the distribution in Sokoto, that the gesture was to offer succor to the needy in the spirit of the Ramadan.

“The foundation’s aim is to ensure peace and development of Nigeria as well as fight poverty and hunger among the needy in the society.

“Today we are inaugurating the food distribution in Sokoto state, which will be extended to Kebbi and Zamfara states and by the year 2020, we wish to expand the gesture to other parts of the country,” he said.

Earlier, Malam Muhammad Maidoki, the Chairman,  Sokoto State Zakkat and Endowment Commission, commended the foundation for the gesture, which he said would ease the suffering of the needy in the society.

He said that 400 orphans and 50 IDP’s in the state were going to benefit from the exercise, adding that each would receive a bag of rice with fabric or groundnut oil and N1,000.

Maidoki appealed to other leaders and wealthy individuals to emulate the Sultan in order to assist the less privileged in the society.

TBI Africa said the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the foundation was established by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar in November 2014, with the aim of promoting development, peaceful co-existence, tolerance, better understanding of Islam and provision of humanitarian aid to the needy and the vulnerable in Nigeria.
