The BRICS group of emerging nations, Brazil, China, Russia, India and South Africa has stressed the need to increase the representation of developing countries in the United Nations and its Security Council.
Foreign ministers meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, reiterated the urgent need to strengthen and reform the multilateral system, including the UN, WTO, IMF, and other international organisations, according to a statement issued by the Brazilian Foreign Ministry.
The UN `should promote the interests of all’ and undergo a comprehensive reform to make it more efficient and to increase the representation of the developing countries so that it can adequately respond to global challenges,’ the statement quoted the ministers as saying.
The ministers discussed the crisis in Venezuela with Brazilian Foreign Minister, Ernesto Araujo, calling on the international community to hear the `cry for freedom’ of the Venezuelan opposition, daily Folha de Sao Paulo reported.
But the foreign minister of Russia, an ally of Venezuelan President, Nicolas Maduro, said outside intervention was not desirable in the South American country.
Sergei Lavrov said it was better to rely on international law and support Venezuelans without outside interference, according to Folha de Sao Paulo.
The ministers met to prepare for a BRICS summit in Brasilia in November.
