UN Chief condemns U.S. mass shootings, urges action against hatred

UN Secretary General António Guterres has “strongly” condemned Monday’s mass shootings  in the U.S.

Briefing UN correspondents in New York on Monday, his spokesman, Mr Stephane Dujarric, said that the UN was shocked and outraged by the attacks.

No fewer  than 29 persons were killed and 53 injured in two separate gun attacks in Texas and Ohio on Saturday.

Reports say the Texas attack, which claimed 20 lives, was carried out by a 21-year-old white man at a supermarket in the city of El Paso, near the U.S.-Mexico border.

The attacker was immediately arrested, and authorities are investigating the incident as domestic terrorism.

Thirteen hours later, a 24-year-old man identified as Conor Betts shot dead nine people, including his sister, leaving 27 others injured.

Guterres extended his “heartfelt condolences” to the families and loved ones of the victims.

“He expresses his solidarity with the peoples and governments of the U.S. and of Mexico from where a number of those killed and injured in El Paso attack hailed.

“The Secretary General stresses the need for all to work together to counter violence rooted in hatred racism, xenophobia and all forms of discrimination,” Dujarric said.
