Typhoon Francisco on Tuesday pounded the southern Japanese island of Kyushu with devastating winds and torrential rains causing the cancellation of more than 200 flights in the region.
Broadcaster NHK reported that one person was found dead after apparently falling into a swollen river in the town of Kokonoe in Kyushu.
NHK also reported that a number of trains were suspended and at least 220 flights were cancelled in southern Japan.
The season’s eight typhoon made landfall near the city of Miyazaki around 5 a.m (or 1900 GMT). It reached gusts of up to 144 kilometres per hour before weakening as it passed through Kyushu.
However, forecasters still warned of more mudslides, strong winds and swollen rivers on the island.
According to Japan’s Meteorological Agency, the eye of the storm as at 6 p.m on Tuesday is 40 kilometres north-east of Tsushima Island.
