Buhari reportedly sacks Ita Enang days after N2.3bn Ruga budget claim, appoints Senator Omoworare

Reports have it that President Muhammadu Buhari has sacked Senator Ita Enang as his Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate).

Even though the presidency is yet to confirm or debunk the report, Premium Times quotes a source close to the Presidency as saying on Sunday evening, that President Buhari has Senator Babajide Omoworare from Osun state, as Mr Enang’s replacement.

It is believed that the Presidency is not impressed with Enang’s management of the relationship between President Buhari and senators in the eighth Senate.

Another source however believes that the ex-Akwa Ibom senator’s sack was triggered by his recent controversial comments on the suspended Ruga project of the federal government. The source said the presidency found Enang’s comments distasteful and in contravention of its strategy on the matter.

The federal government had claimed that the programme, which was suspended under pressure due to opposition from southern states, was optional, but details that emerged later showed that it had been conceived for all 36 states and Abuja, and at least in one state.

Last week, Enang tried to convince southern states to accept the Ruga programme, claiming that the Buhari administration had earmarked N2.258 billion in the 2019 budget for its implementation.

The leadership of the Senate, however came out on Sunday to debunk the claim, challenging Enang to show Nigerians where the N2.258bn was written in the budget.
