The Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) has appealed to Akwa Ibom government to support the efforts of the association in deepening the use of gas for cooking.

The President of NALPGAM, Mr Nosa Ogieva-Okunbor, said this in his address delivered during the 2019 Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Uyo.

Ogieva-Okunbor said the meeting was taken to Akwa Ibom as deliberate policy of the gas marketers to create awareness on the safety in the use cooking gas.

He said that in spite of the fact that Akwa Ibom was currently the highest oil and gas producing state, the use of gas by residents was poor.

“Available statistics show that the LPG consumption in Akwa Ibom State was just 11, 000 MT as at 2017. For a state which is the highest oil and gas producing State in the country with a population of over 6, 000, 000 people goes to show the abysmal consumption level of LPG.

“Therefore, the choice of Uyo as the venue for the Association’s 2019 AGM is well understood, as it is borne out of the contributions of the Association to ensure that the message of the use of LPG is taken to every corner of the country,” he said.

Ogieva-Okunbor said that not fewer than 300 gas cylinders worth over N5 million distributed to Akwa Ibom people during the association Annual General Meeting as a means of creating awareness and giving back to the society.

He said that out of the 300 gas cylinders with burners that would be distributed free, 100 gas cylinders would be given to Mrs Martha Emmanuel pet project FeYREP, for onward distribution to the less privileged to deepen the use of cooking gas in the state.

The president of the association said that the free distribution of gas cylinders was to increase penetration of cooking gas usage in the state and country at large.

According to him, the use of cooking gas was the cheapest and safest energy in the country, adding that Nigeria has the best of gas in the world.

“One of the thing we added to this year’s AGM which we started last year is that in our Association’s attempt to deepen the usage of LPG which is commonly called cooking gas.

“In attempt to deepen it, we will be giving out cylinders, and in Uyo, we are going to give out 300 of Cylinders.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Environment and Petroleum Resources, Mr Ekong Sampson, commended the association for bringing the 2019 AGM to Akwa Ibom to depen awareness on the use of cooking gas.

The commissioner promised state government collaboration with the association to create awareness on the use of LPG in the state.

Receiving the 100 gas cylinders on behalf of Mrs Martha Emmanuel, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr Glory Edet, assured the association that the awareness would be taken to all the 31 LGAs to let the women know that gas is the safest, cleanest and cheapest means of cooking.

The  highpoint of the event was the distribution of gas cylinders with burners to women on random basis.
