Mr Rotimi Olowo, representing Somolu Constituency 1 at the Lagos State House of Assembly, on Wednesday urged members of his constituency to perform their civic responsibilities to achieve a cleaner Lagos.
Olowo made the appeal at a Stakeholders’ Constituency Meeting, with the theme: “Environmental Challenges: Community Engagement to Facilitate Lasting Solution’’ held at Somolu Local Government Secretariat.
He said that the stakeholders’ meeting was to involve various communities and re-orientate them on the need to properly handle environmental challenges in Lagos.
“The 9th Assembly will continue to do everything possible within its capacity to bring government closer to the people in order to facilitate participatory governance.
“The progress of our state is a collective responsibility. We urge you to continue to support the government by performing your civic responsibilities.
“Communities can come up with suggestions and bring an end to the lingering threat of environmental challenges.
“This, we believe, can be achieved by curbing indiscriminate dumping of refuse on streets, drainage and main highways in the state,” Olowo said.
According to him, constituents need to be enlightened on the need to properly dispose their wastes.
“The Lagos State House of Assembly is appealing to residents to comply with the Environmental Laws of the State.
“We urge them to embrace attitudinal change and join hands with the government in a renewed commitment to preserve the environment,’’ the lawmaker said.
Olowo assured the people that there would be constant removal of refuse and silt from drains for free flow of storm water across the state.
Mr Kehinde Joseph, member, representing Alimosho II constituency in the Lagos State House of Assembly, at his own constituency meeting, promised to focus on the education of children in the constituency.
Joseph made the promise at the Igando-Ikotun Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Ikotun, a suburb of Lagos State.
He said that he was touched by the fact that some of the children in the constituency could not afford the basic books needed for them to learn.
Earlier in his keynote address titled, “Environmental Challenge: Community Engagement to Facilitate Lasting Solution’’, James decried the deplorable state of infrastructure in the constituency.
He also said that the traffic situation within the constituency was worrisome and promised to look into it.
The lawmaker made a presentation on the increasing environmental issues in the constituency and said the situation would be improved upon.
Mr Emmanuel Okoroigbo, leader of the Igbo community in Alimosho, said James was a round peg in a round hole.
He expressed the hope that the representative would deliver on his campaign promises.
