GenCos fail to generate 3,133.9 MW due to unavailability of distribution infrastructure

The Advisory Power Team, office of the Vice President said  Electricity Generation Companies (GenCos), could not generate 2,751.5 megawatts (MW) of electricity on Sunday due to unavailability of distribution infrastructure.

The GenCos comprise gas-fired and hydro stations.

The Advisory Power Team stated this in its daily energy report, copy of which was obtained in Abuja on Monday.

It also attributed the 2,751.5 megawatts not generated to high frequency.

According to it, 220 megawatts of electricity are also not generated due to unavailability of transmission infrastructure during the period under review.

It also said that 1,379.5 megawatts was not generated due to unavailability of gas.

The report revealed that the power sector lost estimated N2.08 billion on Sunday due to insufficient gas supply, distribution and transmission infrastructure.

It, however, said that the GenCos released an average of 3,104 megawatts-hour of electricity into the national grid on Sunday.

The team said the electricity sent out by the GenCos was down by 244.8 megawatts from the 3,349 released on Saturday, adding that zero megawatt was recorded as loss due to water management procedures.

On sector reform and activities, it said that the dominant constraint for Sunday was high frequency also resulting from unavailability of distribution infrastructure.

The report, however, said that the peak generation attained on Sunday was 3,799.6 megawatts.
