In a bid to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, the Lagos State government has decided to shutter night clubs and bars.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made this announcement on Friday 20th of March, 2020 during a press briefing in Lagos.
The governor said that the new order was in place to comply with the large gathering restriction order which the state gave on Wednesday, 18th of March. The state had on Wednesday suspended all religious gatherings above 50 persons in the state for four weeks.
Prince Olanrewaju Elegushi, the Commissioner for Home Affairs, announced this to newsmen in Ikeja after a closed-door meeting with religious leaders in the state on the issue of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19).
Lagos State also announced the closure of all public and private schools in the state effective Monday, March 23, 2020. According to a statement endorsed by Mrs Folashade Adefisayo, the Commissioner for Education, said the closure of schools in the state became expedient “to prevent our children and their teachers from getting more vulnerable to the pandemic.”
The statement maintained that the “closure is not intended to create panic but to arrest the spread of the disease”.
Nigeria’s recorded cases now stand at 12 as disclosed by the Commissioner for Health Prof. Akin Abayomi yesterday, 19th of March, 2020.
According to data from Johns Hopkins University, as of the time of this writing, the global confirmed cases number stands at 247,400 meanwhile over 10,000 people have died and people have recovered 86,037.
