Fire guts plank market in Lagos

Fire has gutted the Ketu Plank Market in the Ketu area of Lagos State, destroying property worth millions of naira in the process.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the fire started from a section of the market on Sunday and spread to adjoining parts, causing severe damage to goods belonging to traders in the market.

The Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed the incident, said there was no loss of life, adding that the fire had been curtailed by emergency responders.

Oke-Osanyintolu said, “Emergency responders, comprising the LASEMA Response Team and the Lagos State Fire Service, have curtailed the raging inferno at the Ketu Plank Market on Demurin Street, Ketu, Lagos.

“The cause of the inferno, which reportedly started from one part of the market, has yet to be ascertained; however, it is evident that there is extensive damage with valuable goods destroyed by the fire.

“Fortunately, no lives were lost in the inferno, which has been brought under control and dampened down.”

In another development, Oke-Osanyintolu said a truck, which rammed into a culvert around Mile 2, inward the Kirikiri area of the state, had been removed from the road.

It was learnt that the accident happened when the truck experienced a brake failure but there was no loss of life.

Oke-Osanyintolu stated, “In another part of Lagos, the LASEMA Response Unit recovered a truck conveying a 40-foot container that ran over a culvert at Mile 2, inward Kirikri, earlier on Sunday.

“Investigation by the LRT determined that the accident was a result of mechanical error (brake failure) by the truck.

“No loss of life, nor injuries were recorded in the incident, where the LRT, LASTMA and men of the Nigeria Police were responders.

“The affected truck has been evacuated off the road to a layby with the aid of the agency’s heavy duty equipment.”
