Liquefied Petroleum Gas is a mixture of gases present n natural gas or dissolved in oil. The gaseous components at room temperature of LPG-propane and butane-are easy to liquify and hence their name.
LPG, like Liquefied Natural Gas too, is a clean form of automotive fuel that can be worked ,(by skilled conversion technicians) into vehicles (advisably) not older than 10 years. Given the pump price of petroleum presently and the downward slide of the naira, converting a vehicle to having the bi-fueling characteristic of using LPG is a competitive alternative or complementary fuel to PMS. It automatically doubles the energy option of a vehicle if, say for a very long distance journey, the conventional fuel tank and the LPG tank were filled.
LPG, relative to PMS, emits 68 per cent less NOx and 15 per cent CO2. Indeed, the engine will run with dramatically less noise level.
Converting a vehicle to be able to use LPG is not cheap and the safety requirements for the conversion is quite stringent above the pedestrian health and safety disposition of many of our usual auto technicians. However, it must be clearly stated, that the technology is not novel and can be safely done by any well trained technician. I’m soon starting the gas conversion training in my training institute.
For some vehicles, the conversion may lead to some loss of space inside the boot/trunk or the loss of the extra/spare tyre’s place.
Strict inspection of the gas infrastructure in the vehicle must be conducted every 30,000km after installation for safety checks. Although, a responsible installer should give a two-year-or-150,000-km warranty.
