Conflicting orders: Our Judiciary has to be re-calibrated – Doherty

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, Adedeji Doherty, says Nigeria’s judiciary has to be re-calibrated before the nation can reach its full potential democratically.

Doherty made this assertion in a statement on Saturday in Lagos.

He spoke against the backdrop of various injunctions and ex-parte orders granted some PDP leaders by some courts of same jurisdiction recently.

Different court pronouncements removed and restated Prince Uche Secondus as the National Chairman of the PDP in the ongoing leadership crisis rocking the party.

A High Court in Rivers had order Secondus to stop parading himself as the chairman of the party.

In another twist on Thursday, a High Court in Kebbi granted an ex-parte motion sought by Yahaya Usman, Abubakar Muhammed and Bashir Suleiman, that there should be a stay of execution on an earlier ex-parte order.

Doherty said: “It’s time to re-calibrate the judiciary.

“The blatant pronouncement of court orders secured by the political class continues to embarrass and insult the psyche of most well-meaning Nigerians.”

Doherty described the trend as disappointing, saying such acts would create a very unstable political environment in the nation.

He appealed to the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the Attorney-General of the Federation to step into the judiciary to prevent dishing out of court orders indiscriminately.

In many advanced countries lawyers and other judicial officers who abuse court processes are sanctioned and at times have their licences withdrawn by the regulatory authorities.
