Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has called on Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) workers to exhibit high level of transparency and accountability in the discharge of their duties.
ICPC Chairman, Prof. Bolaji Owasanonye, made the call in Ibadan on Tuesday in his goodwill message at a two-day anti-corruption sensitisation programme.
The programme, held at Ibadan Airport, was organised by Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) of FAAN.
Owasanonye, who was represented at the occasion by Mr Japhet Udeani, an official of ICPC, described airport as the gateway of every nation and stressed the need for workers to be corruption-free.
According to him, corruption is the greatest tragedy and main obstacle to the stability and growth of most developing countries, with Nigeria not exempted.
“The many faces of corruption and the various ways it affects and impacts on the socio-economic and political systems of our country and the African continent are too glaring,” he noted.
The ICPC chairman said that making the public service system corruption-free and efficient required sincere commitment and diligence from all citizens, particularly public servants.
He urged staff members of FAAN to always do the right things, even when no one was watching.
Owasanoye commended FAAN Director, Rabiu Yadudu, and the management team of the organisation for organising the programme.
He also called for more support for the ACTU unit of FAAN to be able to carry out its duties diligently so as to help the management in checkmating the incidences of corruption and other related vices.
In her speech, Mrs Helen Akinkugbe of ACTU said that the sensitisation/enlightenment was designed for all FAAN staffers, stakeholders and the general public in Ibadan.
Akinkugbe added that the programme was aimed at creating anti-corruption awareness and curbing corruption and corrupt practices at the nation’s airports.
She observed that the tasks before ACTU were arduous and required courage and commitment.
Akinkugbe, however, pledged that the unit would execute its functions and achieve the objectives for which it was established by the Federal Government.
She sought for the support and cooperation of FAAN management, staffers, stakeholders in the aviation industry and the general public to achieve success.
In her lecture, Secretary of ACTU, Mrs Njideka Nwobu, called for collective efforts at eradicating corruption in workplaces.
According to her, extortion of passengers, bribery, gratification, influencing of postings and fraud, among others, are against the job ethic.
She enjoined FAAN staff members to imbibe transparency and accountability in the course of performing their duties.
