A parent has said that her son had a faced a similar ordeal to that of the late Sylvester Oromoni as a pupil of Dowen College Lekki.
The mother shared her experience during a zoom meeting organised by the Concerned Parents and Educators’ network – group of about 200,000 parents and educators started by education branding specialist, Mrs. Yinka Ogunde on Saturday night.
The woman, who became emotional while a former teacher of the school who called himself Samuel said he resigned because the hostel’s multi-level building at Dowen College did not allow for proper supervision of the male pupils, chided him for not speaking up about his observations.
“I was a guidance counselor for many years. I want to say that I worked at Dowen College for several years. One of the problems we have with boarding houses today is that the structures are not purposed-built for boarding houses. I might be referring to Dowen College. Now a situation where you have several floors and no for floor has a house parent monitoring the students. By the time you hear a a sound and go upstairs, the seniors have changed the story.
“From the first day they moved the children from hired buildings into the permanent hostel, it was a time bomb waiting.
“Eventually I resigned. I left there and went to A’ Hall because of that situation. The children are not well monitored. I shouldn’t say so much about a place I am not working.”
The aggrieved mother then interjected: “Why did you not say it since? Why are you just saying it now when a child has died? My son was bullied and almost died in Dowen College.
“Why did you keep this for nine years and then you left the school? My son was a victim. They did exactly what they did to Sylvester to my boy. They put off the light; they beat him; they were dancing around; they put a box on his head – seven of them. They forced my son to kneel down; they put a suitcase on his head; they were dancing like around him like an acoustic thing.
“At the same time they took out a phone and recorded it. That video online somewhere. Now you are telling me that you left Dowen because of the bullying. Why did you not say so that people like us will not put our children in that hole?
“I have been crying since on Thursday when I saw the video I have not eaten; I have not drank; I have not slept. A child has died. That was 11year old – the same age with my son. He could have been my son. I was lucky but Sylvester was not lucky. You tell me you observed this for nine years then you left. On what basis are you talking?” She said.
She went on to say that girls were lucky because the woman in charge, Madam Celine, was a disciplinarian.
She continued: “But where they commit all the havoc. Everything Sylvester Oromoni said is the truth.”
She further claimed that the principal saw the video of her son but chose not to act.
“The principal told me that she saw my son’s video of being bullied but she did not think it was important to act because it was not yet online. So she slept on it.
“And you tell me that you knew and you allowed us to bringing our children to the school. The school was collecting N3 million and you cannot put ordinary CCTV camera? 11 year old boy that just left them in September and they bullied him – seven boys,” she said.
In a statement signed by Mrs. Ogunde following the Zoom meeting, the CPE called on the government to pay unscheduled visits to boarding houses across the state.
The statement reads: “The Concerned Parents and Educators Initiative has called on government to address critical issues in the Education sector. This call was made in a communiqué sent to the media after a meeting with key stakeholders on Saturday 4th December.
“The Virtual meeting with over 440 participants was attended by Parents, School owners, Nigerians in the diaspora, Teachers, Counsellors and other key stakeholders in the education sector.
“According to the founder of the group, Mrs Yinka Ogunde, the issues at stake even goes beyond the education sector. This is a time that we must all come together as a nation and choose to re-examine our values and the impact of it in the lives of young Nigerians. It is a period that calls for urgent National reorientation.
“The meeting was held to discuss some of the critical issues that the Dowen College incident has brought to light.
Participants made various suggestions on how to tackle the problems encountered by Nigerian children in the boarding school
- Discipline in our schools should be well defined.
- Schools should have a system where students can report bullying without fear of victimization.
- CPE should have a desk office to report incidents of bullying.
- The ministry of education and youth ministry needs to set up monitoring criteria and set up formidable task force to ensure safeguarding of boarding schools.
- Ministry of education should have regular unplanned visits to boarding schools and ratings should be made public.
- Schools should have safeguarding policies.
- Peer mentoring
- Suggestion box should be made use of in schools.
- Boarding house should be well structured for that purpose with well trained full time staff.
- CCTV cameras should be installed in the hostels.
- Whistle blowing policy in schools.
- Government should partner with NGO’s to monitor schools.
- Government should organize regular training for hostel staff.”
Mrs Ogunde assured that CPE would continue engagement with stakeholders “to work towards driving change in the education sector.”
Also a Facebook user gave account of her experience with the bullying of her child when the current principal of Dowen College, Lekki, was the principal of the school her child attended.

My name is Tracynither Nicolas Ohiri (Twealthy Billions) and I had 2 boys in GIC Lekki phase one where Mrs Layiwola was a former school principal. A student in a senior class bullied my first son in that school so bad to the point of damaging the screen of my son’s Tablet. Mrs Layiwola felt she could plead and offer an apology on his behalf without giving me the opportunity of meeting with the said boy and ask from him directly the reason He always bullies my son. She pleaded they were only kids and would settle it amongst themselves later.
I made her to understand we are talking about my son coming home with a broken ankle because the said bully, the same boy kicked so hard on his abdomen for coming to the football pitch when he was playing football with his friends. My son fell on his knees and he went ahead to step on his ankle. To further torture my son, he grabbed his Samsung Tablet and damaged the screen. Trust me I refused to have that and demanded to see the boy and his parents who raised a bully but she refused and after days of going to the school with her preventing me from meeting the boy and his parents.
I drove to the school around 6am on a Monday morning and waited for the boy and his parents at the gate. The moment they came to drop him, I grabbed his school bag, seized it, the mother came out shouting Aaaaaah Aaaaah aaah, what’s going on here, I landed a Hot dirty slap on her. I was going to use my head next on her forehead before the security men and people around grabbed me. I drove off with the boy’s school bag, ignored all their phone calls for that day and returned it to the school principal the next morning making sure that i damaged his laptop screen beyond control. I took time to explain to my sons not to feel embarrassed, that everything I did that day was for their own good and security. My boys spent extra 2 years in GIC Lekki phase one and till they left that school no teacher or student bullied them. Mrs Layiwola left GIC for Dowen college months later after this incident.
This morning when my second son hugged me from behind with a kiss, reminding me of this story I smiled.
Getting to know now that she is the current principal of Dowen College where Slyvester a 12 year old boy was bullied to death, I’m not surprised. May God heal his parents and family. JUSTICE FOR SYVELSTER OROMONI
