The Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Segun Dawodu, on Saturday flagged off the 7th Access Bank Lagos City Marathon at the National Stadium Surulere.
The flag off race of the Silver label Lagos marathon started at exactly 6.00 a.m. with fewer runners due to the COVID-19 restrictions and protocols.
According to the organisers, Nilayo Sports Management Company, the 7th Lagos City Marathon features 90 foreign elite runners alongside no fewer than 30,000 other runners.
Herbert Wigwe, Group Managing Director, Access Bank Plc., official sponsors of the event, said the race had promoted the culture of health and wellness of Lagos State, and had also boosted revenue through tourism.
“The past year, like never before, has underscored the need to be in good health both in body and mind, thus we will continue to prioritise well-being, as we work toward creating sustainable future for all Africans.
“Before the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 50,000 runners participated in the marathon annually.
“The turnout today is deliberate and should not be seen as reduction in the importance of interest in this event.
“Just like 2021, this year’s turnout has been moderated by the need to follow strict COVID-19 protocols, to ensure the safety of all participants,” he said.
Wigwe noted that the 10-km race had been reinstated to the marathon, with a desire to maintain social distance.
“The Access Bank Lagos City Marathon is a global spectacle. I am incredibly proud of the work that has been put in so far, and I am positive that this year’s race will be nothing short of remarkable,” he said.
The starting point of the full marathon is National Stadium, Surulere, while the 10km starts from Grace Garden Event Place, Lekki.
